Five minutes with Matt Minol

Meet the avant-garde supergeek from Tasmania whose talent is starting to draw some serious attention.
“For me, hairdressing is all about creating characters. My work tends to have a cartoon-like element, and I love to play with texture and colour.
“I try not to follow what everyone else is doing, without being too over-the-top. Everything I do has a sense of the commercial about it, but I don’t play straight down the field.
“I draw a lot of inspiration from cosplay and love all things gaming and sci-fi. In a former life I studied computer programming, so I guess you could say I am a bit of a geek at heart.
“My interest in technology definitely influences my hairdressing in a big way. The finesse required for cutting and colouring requires the same attention to detail as creating a piece of software or computer game.
“Since I’ve taken the leap into hairdressing I’ve never looked back. Some incredible opportunities have come my way, like being a finalist in the Australian Hair Fashion Awards.
"I also got a piece in Vogue, which felt pretty good!”
