New Years Resolution

Happy New Year! For many of us, the first of January is the start of a new chapter; a chance to reflect on the past year, think about what we achieved, celebrate the wins, and set some goals for the next twelve months.

Here at the Shortcuts office, the team is feeling pretty inspired by what’s on the cards for 2014. There’s some big goals on the horizon, and everyone has their unique approach to making sure we achieve them. A few team members have shared their resolutions on how they plan to make the most of the opportunities the coming year presents.


Welcome tough conversations

My resolution: I’m not the type to shy away from difficult conversations, and this year I want to harness this to improve the way we all work. I’m not going to pick fights, but I am going to address things as they need addressing, and ensure key decisions are made, fast.

Why this is important: It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but having a difficult conversation once in a while is extremely important. There’s nothing worse than skirting around a subject that needs addressing, and it can be a real relief to everyone involved when things are brought out into the open. Besides, you never know who is already on your side, and what ideas they might be able to offer.

Stay positive

My resolution: I don’t usually make resolutions, but one thing I really believe in is focusing on what’s good in life.

Why this is important: If you’re feeling positive, it can help make the people around you feel good about themselves, and on the flip side if you focus on the negative it can really affect your friends, family and colleagues. If everyone spent five minutes a day counting their blessings, the world would be a better place.

Be fit and healthy

My resolution: About six months ago I decided to make some big lifestyle changes to help me become my fittest, healthiest self. I’ve achieved some great results so far, and in the New Year, I would like to continue this momentum.

Why this is important: It’s true what they say – there’s nothing like a bit of exercise to brighten your overall outlook. I’ve found that I’m more motivated both personally and professionally, and I can focus better. Taking the time in my lunch break to go to the gym makes the day go quicker, and improves my performance at work.

Learn from the best

My resolution: I’m lucky to be part of a highly skilled and motivated team at work. In 2014, I would like to focus my energy and learn as much as possible from the talented people around me.

Why this is important: Knowledge sharing is so important – it’s a great way to help more junior team members learn new skills, and also means that everyone has the expertise they need to support each other through the busy times. Ultimately, everything we do is a team effort, and it’s good to know we have each other’s backs.

Seek inspiration in new places

My resolution: To explore new locations and take the time to enjoy and really pay attention to my surroundings. Whether it’s a quick bike ride to a park I’ve never visited, or an overseas trip to a new country, I want to immerse myself completely in the experience.

Why this is important: It’s so easy to stay inside your comfort zone and keep on doing things as you’ve always done them. Travel is a great eye opener, it gives you the inspiration you need to keep thinking outside the box, and the perspective to understand that what you have back home is something worth treasuring.

Live in the now

My resolution: 2014 will be the year I learn to switch off, and enjoy my downtime.

Why this is important: I love what I do for a living, but sometimes it feels like I’m either working, or thinking about work, even when I’m trying to relax or spend time with friends and family. I need to learn to be present in the moment, and centre my awareness on the here and now.
